In this feature, I discussed how humid weather makes women more prone to fungal, bacterial, and urinary tract infections, the early warning signs they should never ignore, and the essential preventive measures every woman must follow to stay healthy and protected during the rainy season. Here are the key insights I provided:

India’s Return to Natural Birthing: Why More Women Are Saying No to C-Section Delivery

India’s Return to Natural Birthing: Why More Women Are Saying No to C-Section Delivery India’s Return to Natural Birthing: Why More Women Are Saying No to C-Section Delivery ● C-sections, while sometimes necessary and life-saving, are still major surgeries that carry risks for both the mother and baby. ● For generations, childbirth was a personal, physiological experience. However, in recent decades, birthing has become increasingly medicalised. Across India and much of the world, Caesarean section (C-section) deliveries have surged far beyond what global health standards recommend. ● Today, however, a shift is happening. More Indian women are once again embracing natural birthing as an empowering, safe experience supported by skilled care. ● “We see this change every day. Expectant mothers are asking the right questions, seeking gentle birthing options, and trusting their ability to bring life into the world naturally and safely,” says Dr. Vinoad Bharrati, Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, Director, Elite Momz unit of Rising Medicare Hospital. ● For reference, you can read a similar perspective here: ETV Bharat – India’s Natural Birthing Trend. The Numbers Tell a Story ● According to the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5, 2019–21), India’s overall C-section rate increased to over 21% in 2021, up from 17% in 2016. ● In private hospitals, the figure often doubles, reaching **40–50%**, far higher than the World Health Organization’s recommended 10–15%. ● While C-sections can be lifesaving in complicated pregnancies, unnecessary surgical deliveries can lead to longer recovery, higher maternal morbidity, and complications in future pregnancies. ● This rising awareness is fueling a nationwide movement towards restoring childbirth as a natural, low-intervention experience for women with low-risk pregnancies. ● Across India, more obstetricians, midwives, and birthing centres are supporting vaginal, natural, and gentle births. Women Are Leading the Change ● “Many women themselves are driving this change. Natural birth allows for faster recovery, earlier bonding with the baby, and avoids surgery. New mothers want comfort, mobility, and quicker healing,” explains Dr. Bharrati. ● His unit supports mothers who choose natural birth through private labour suites designed for mobility and relaxation, safe pain management options, and allowing a birth companion for emotional support. ● This balance of medical safety and emotional support helps women achieve natural births confidently and comfortably. ● Natural birthing benefits both mother and baby. A baby passing through the birth canal expels lung fluid naturally and receives beneficial bacteria, supporting long-term immunity. ● C-sections, while essential in certain cases, carry risks like infection, long recovery, and complications in future pregnancies. Some studies even link repeat C-sections to breastfeeding delays and child undernutrition. ● Meanwhile, natural birth supports the body’s innate processes, promoting smoother recovery, better bonding, and early breastfeeding. ● “When fully informed, most women prefer vaginal birth not out of ideology, but instinct. They value faster recovery, early breastfeeding, and the emotional fulfilment of giving birth naturally,” adds the gynaecologist.

Menstrual Health: How To Reset Your Cycle Naturally After Festive Disruptions

Menstrual Health: How To Reset Your Cycle Naturally After Festive Disruptions Menstrual Health: How to Reset Your Cycle Naturally After Festive Disruptions Many women face delayed cycles, mood swings, cramps, bloating, or fatigue after festivals. During the festive season, most people focus on rituals, family, and guests. It’s natural, especially during occasions like Diwali, to overlook personal health. Women often handle festive meals, household responsibilities, and caregiving, which silently impacts menstrual health. From early periods to skipped cycles, several disruptions may occur. Once festivities are over, it is important to reset your routine so your menstrual cycle can normalize. For reference, here is the NDTV original article: Menstrual Health – NDTV Key Reasons for Festive Cycle Disruptions Late-night sleep schedules High-sugar or oily festive food Excess caffeine Travel fatigue Emotional stress These factors disturb the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian (HPO) axis, a hormonal network controlling menstruation. Stress increases cortisol levels, which interferes with ovulation and delays periods. Your body simply needs rest, nourishment, and routine to reset. 1. Sleep Sleep 7–8 hours daily at the same time. Avoid screens 30–45 minutes before bed. Create a calming bedtime routine (dim lights, herbal tea, soft music, deep breathing). Balanced sleep resets your circadian rhythm and reduces stress hormones—an essential step toward restoring a healthy cycle. 2. Nutrition Your hormones depend on what you eat. After festivals, avoid harsh detoxes or fasting. Choose wholesome food. Iron-rich foods: spinach, beetroot, dates, pomegranates Healthy fats: nuts, seeds, avocado, ghee, olive oil Proteins: eggs, paneer, lentils, fish Fiber & cruciferous vegetables: broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower (helps remove excess estrogen) Hydration: drink at least 3 liters of water daily Avoid caffeine, packaged foods, and refined sugar. Clean eating naturally resets hormone balance. 3. Exercise Movement improves blood circulation and supports hormonal health, but avoid overexercising. Walking or cycling daily Yoga (butterfly pose, bridge pose, child’s pose) Gentle stretching and breathing exercises 4. Liver and Gut Health Your liver and gut process hormones like estrogen. Festive overeating may overload them, causing bloating, PMS, or irregular periods. Eat fiber-rich foods (oats, millets, fruits, vegetables) Add probiotics (curd, buttermilk) Drink warm water with lemon or turmeric Avoid alcohol and fried food for 2 weeks 5. Stress Management High stress suppresses ovulation and delays periods. Deep breathing (4–6 rhythm) Meditation or mindfulness Nature walks or calming music Talking with loved ones 6. Menstrual Tracking Track start & end dates Note flow, cramps, mood, and energy levels Observe sleep and diet patterns It may take 1–2 cycles for your body to normalize. Be patient. Consult a Gynaecologist If You: Miss your period for more than 6–8 weeks Have excessive bleeding or severe pain Notice acne, hair loss, or weight changes Feel persistently tired or anxious
